Peridot, also called precious olivine, is a gem-quality transparent green olivine. The crystals of peridot have a vitreous luster and conchoidal fracture. Gem-quality olivine is a mineral that composes a lot of the earth's mantel, the layer below the crust. It is also common in basalts on the moon.

Before the 18th century, peridot was considered a type of Topaz. It has been mined for approximately four thousand years and was considered the gem of the sun by the Egyptians in the early 1500 BC. The Peridot gemstones were used in the breastplates of the Jewish High Priest. It is said that Cleopatra favored this gemstone and that Peridots were called Emeralds.
